Wool – The Planet Friendly Fibre

Wool is a remarkable natural fibre with a multitude of benefits that make it an excellent choice for various applications. These natural properties make an exceptional material for a wide range of uses, from clothing and textiles to insulation and bedding. Its environmental benefits and superior performance characteristics contribute to a sustainable and comfortable lifestyle.

Here are some key properties and benefits of wool:

  • Renewable: Wool is harvested from sheep, which grow a new fleece every year. This makes wool a renewable resource.
  • Sustainable: Wool production has a relatively low environmental impact. Sheep grazing can promote biodiversity and improve soil health.
  • Biodegradable: Wool decomposes naturally, breaking down into valuable nutrients that enhance soil quality.
  • Thermal Properties: Wool fibres are highly effective at regulating temperature. They keep you warm in cold weather by trapping air and providing insulation, and cool in hot weather by wicking away moisture and allowing air circulation.
  • Insulating Properties: The crimped structure of wool fibres creates tiny air pockets that trap heat, providing excellent insulation against cold temperatures.
  • Naturally Water-Resistant: Wool fibres have a natural lanolin coating that repels water, making it resistant to moisture. This property keeps the fabric dry and comfortable even in damp conditions.
  • Stain Resistance: The natural lanolin coating on wool fibres also helps repel dirt and stains, keeping wool garments and products looking clean and fresh.
  • Odour Resistance: Wool has natural antimicrobial properties that prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi, which cause odours. This makes wool products less likely to retain unpleasant smells, even after extended use.
  • Durability: Wool fibres are strong and resilient, which means wool products are long-lasting and resistant to wear and tear.
  • Fire Resistance: Wool is naturally flame-resistant and does not melt or drip, making it a safer choice for various applications, including clothing and home textiles.
  • Comfort: Wool is soft and comfortable against the skin. Modern processing techniques have further enhanced the softness of wool products, making them suitable for sensitive skin.
